About Us

After completing his formal education at Reed College, Harvard, and Portland State University, with a concentration in architecture, urban planning, and drafting, Bob Querry began his career in 1988, starting out as an intern for the City of Portland Bureau of Planning, then soon moving on to Washington County, home to Oregon's Willamette Valley wine country.

Moving to Washington State in 1990, he began working for the Columbia River Gorge Commission, where the focus was on the preservation of the scenic qualities of the Gorge.

After becoming aware of a job opening on the beautiful island of San Juan in NW Washington, Bob relocated to Friday Harbor in 1991 where he was hired as an associate planner with San Juan County.

Bob remained with the county for 10 years, where he continued to develop his expertise in Shoreline, Comprehensive Plan, Land Divisions, and environmental reviews.  He became skilled, as well, at representing the Planning Department before the County Commission, Planning Commission, Board of Adjustment, and the Hearing Examiner. An integral part of the necessary tasks required a good working relationship with several State and Federal agencies, including the Coastal Commission, Ecology, Wildlife, Fisheries, Natural Resources, and the Corps of Engineers.

Acting upon his desire to leave the government job and work the "other side of the counter", Bob quit the county in 2001 and created The Permit Center, A Private Land Use Consulting Service. He began assisting his clients with the daunting task of getting them the permits he had become so familiar with.  His clientele greatly appreciate and benefit from the fact that he had learned to predict and expect the constant changes and depth of complexity involved. 

As a former local government planner, Bob Querry now skillfully provides all of the necessary permit assistance regarding building and land use permits - including upland, shoreline, aquatic, rural, and urban development projects- together with the associated project application packets.  Bob is appreciated as a competent advocate for clients at public hearings as well as in administrative settings, and he continues to interface with the multitude of government agencies on their behalf.

Terra Tamai brings an entirely different skill set to the team.  Terra moved from California to Friday Harbor in 2008.  She purchased a cottage on five-acres in the woods, complete with several out-buildings, one being an illegal guest house.  Fortunately for her, the previous owner had already hired Bob Querry to resolve the after-the-fact issues, and he was working on her property when she met him.  "Bob likes to tell people that he came with the house", Terra says jokingly. "I guess he was correct."

Terra had retired from her job as an executive chef in Santa Barbara, CA, and was working as a food writer when they became a couple.  It was a smooth and natural transition for the two to start working together, as she had successfully bought and sold homes professionally for years, as well as having worked as a realtor.  Bob brought her into The Permit Center as the office manager, and she quickly grew to love watching the many happy clients as Bob helped them overcome obstacles and continue building their dreams.

In the fall of 2012 the team started up a regional office on the Central Coast of California .  The transition has required them to spend much time traveling and working remotely as Bob continues the efficient and quality service he has always provided to his clients in Friday Harbor, and simultaneously serves the new territories in California.  Bob and Terra are looking forward to adding more players to their team as they continue to expand.
